Map Irish Design plots the people, places and projects connected to contemporary communication design, and reveals the impact design has on life in Ireland.

100 Archive is one of Ireland’s most significant resources on design. In 2019 a team of researchers, designers, developers and animators delved into the previous decade of materials gathered by 100 Archive in order to Map Irish Design. We have plotted the connections between projects, people and the stories behind them. Explore by theme or fast track to the insights from the archive data below.

Themes

By exploring the rich networks of people and projects we researched, four core themes emerged as threads linking the design work held in the 100 Archive.

With 39% of all work submitted to the 100 Archive being made for the cultural sector (more than any other category), it is clear that design plays a notable role in how we express our culture.

Irish society has shifted dramatically since 2010. Socially, politically and in terms of how and what we consume, Ireland's changing values can be seen in our design.

Design completely surrounds us: designers have a hand in the websites we visit, the coffee cups we drink out of, the shopfronts we pass by and much more.

Technology and globalisation make the world smaller every day, while at the same time enabling Irish designers and businesses to ever expand their horizons.

Where projects come from

Submissions to the 100 Archive come from designers all over Ireland and Irish designers overseas, with the majority of work being designed in Dublin.

Showcased vs Archived

Each year the 100 Archive receives hundreds of submissions, the majority of which reach our online showcase. From these showcased projects, up to 100 projects make the 100 Archive Selection each year. In 2010 the success rate was 40%. In 2018, 25%.

There are over 1200 designers in Ireland and Irish designers overseas registered on the 100 Archive. Beginning with less than 500 designers, the 100 Archive community has almost tripled in size since its foundation.

Gender

According to the 2016 National Framework for Design, the design industry is 75% male. To see how gender stacks up in the 100 Archive we take a look at how many male and female designers feature in each year’s showcase since 2010.

Individuals vs teams

There’s strength in numbers: though far more projects are submitted by individual designers than by teams, work made by several designers together is more likely to reach the Archive Selections.

Collaborators

Getting others involved pays off too: projects involving more than one designer with help from additional collaborators (photographers, developers, researchers…) is more likely to reach the Archive Selections.
